Amos Rex Opens in Helsinki with teamLab Immersive Show

Helsinki's new Amos Rex museum opens on August 30, 2018, replacing the former Amos Anderson Museum. Designed by JKMM Architects, the museum features a vast underground exhibition space illuminated by skylight cones emerging from the plaza. With a €50 million budget entirely from private funds, Amos Rex encompasses the historic Lasipalatsi glass building and Bio Rex cinema, spanning 6,300 sqm with over 2,000 sqm for exhibitions. Owned by Föreningen Konstsamfundet, the museum's program under director Kai Kartio focuses on experimental contemporary art, 20th-century modernism, and ancient cultures. The inaugural exhibition, 'Massless,' runs until January 6, 2019, featuring digital installations by Japanese collective teamLab. The show includes 150 projectors across five environments, with works like 'Vortex of Light Particles,' 'Graffiti Nature,' 'Black Waves,' 'Crows,' and 'Enso.' teamLab member Kazumasa Nonaka noted the challenge of adapting to the vortex-shaped ceiling. Future exhibitions in early 2019 include a retrospective of Studio Drift and a René Magritte show. Concurrently, Helsinki Festival is ongoing with David Hockney at Taidehalli, Pilvi Takala and Aalto Natives at Kiasma, and Mika Taanila at Emma in Espoo.
