American Photography in Paris: Greenberg, Meyerowitz, Heilbronn
Three exhibitions in Paris showcase American photography through distinct lenses. At the Fondation Henri-Cartier Bresson (January 16 – April 21), the Howard Greenberg Collection presents 150 prints tracing American photography from modernists to FSA documentarians (Evans, Lange) and postwar figures (Abbott, Friedlander). Greenberg's passion-driven selection emphasizes social concern, notably through Dorothea Lange's iconic Migrant Mother. At the MEP (January 23 – April 7, 2013), Joel Meyerowitz's retrospective spans his career from black-and-white street photography inspired by Robert Frank to pioneering color work in New York and Europe, culminating in his nine-month documentation of Ground Zero after 9/11. At Galerie Polaris (January 12 – February 23), Louis Heilbronn's Meet Me On The Surface presents oblique, suspended images of unremarkable places and people, rejecting series and hierarchy.
