Amazon invests $5B in Anthropic with $100B cloud spending commitment for AI development

ai-technology · 2026-04-21

Amazon has committed an additional $5 billion investment in Anthropic, bringing its total stake to $13 billion. In return, Anthropic will spend over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services over the next decade, securing up to 5 GW of computing capacity to train and operate its Claude AI system. The arrangement mirrors a similar $110 billion funding round for OpenAI two months prior, where Amazon contributed $50 billion toward a $730 billion pre-money valuation. Central to the Anthropic agreement are Amazon's custom AI chips, specifically Trainium2 through Trainium4 models, with Trainium3 released in December 2024. Anthropic also secured options to purchase capacity on future Amazon chips as they become available. This deal follows reports of venture capitalists offering Anthropic capital at valuations exceeding $800 billion.
