Amateur Exhibition at Göteborgs Konstmuseum Explores Counter-Bourgeois Art Across Centuries

Göteborgs Konstmuseum hosted the exhibition 'Amateur – variable research initiatives 1900 & 2000' from 20 May to 17 September 2000, curated by Charles Esche, Mark Kremer, and Adam Szymczyk. The show linked historical and contemporary art to critique museum ideology and social contexts. Historical sections examined the Pontus Fürstenberg collection of Swedish Symbolism, including works by Carl Larsson, Per Hasselberg, Emile Soldi, and Ernst Josephson, originally displayed in 1885 and donated in 1902. Curators explored bourgeois and counter-bourgeois dynamics through displays on Ivar Arosenius and Ellen Key, a Scottish social worker in Sweden. Contemporary artists like Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Pawel Althamer, and Tacita Dean presented site-specific works addressing amateurism, inspired by Roland Barthes' ideas on photography as disinterested passion. Projects included Jörgen Svensson's pizzeria sign on the museum facade, Althamer's pigeon loft, and Gregor Schneider's surveillance piece. The exhibition aimed to open museum spaces to outside influences, reflecting on art's societal role across the 20th century, with works also shown at Hasselblad Center and Konsthallen.
