Amanda Turner Pohan's 'Desiring to be Data for Others' at FiveMyles Gallery
Amanda Turner Pohan's solo exhibition 'Desiring to be Data for Others' ran from January 23 through February 21, 2016 at FiveMyles Gallery in Brooklyn. Curated by Carl E. Hazlewood, the installation featured three main works in a scent-filled space. '18 bottles of Pulsating (2016)' presented glass bottles on Plexiglas shelves with labels mimicking nutrition facts but listing bodily metrics like pulse and breath, alongside essences like cypress and fir needle. A metal chair faced a medicine cabinet mirror. A corner shower with visible piping stood illuminated, containing a brown viscous fluid in a closed-loop system with a plastic container feeding and collecting liquid. The shower fluid derived from translating human breathing measurements into scented oils. 'Remnants and residues from my deceased mothers rug (2016)' displayed a fiber mat imprint of the artist's grandmother's carpet, accumulating debris like hair and crumbs. The works explored intimacy, institutional frameworks, and the quantification of bodily presence through sterile, mass-produced components, creating an eerie atmosphere of absent bodies.
