Amanda Carneiro and Raphael Fonseca Named Chief Curators of the 37th São Paulo Biennial

institutional · 2026-04-28

Amanda Carneiro and Raphael Fonseca have been named chief curators for the 37th São Paulo Biennial, which is scheduled for the latter part of 2027 at Pavilhão Ciccillo Matarazzo in Ibirapuera Park. This marks the second instance of two Brazilian curators co-leading the event. Since 2018, Carneiro has served as a curator at MASP and is also the artistic organizer for the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024. Fonseca, who is the visual arts curator at Culturgest in Lisbon, complements her expertise. Their appointments followed a thorough selection process overseen by a committee led by Andrea Pinheiro, who noted that the decision showcases the dedication of Brazil's curatorial generation to contemporary art discussions. The curatorial project will be revealed in the latter half of 2025.
