Amalfi opens immersive Museum of the Compass and Maritime Duchy

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The newly inaugurated Museo della Bussola e del Ducato Marinaro in Amalfi offers an immersive, technology-driven experience of the city's maritime history. Housed in the Arsenale, a historic monument of the former Maritime Republic, the museum displays original navigational instruments, including a boxwood magnetic compass invented by Amalfitans, the Tabula de Amalpha (a milestone in maritime law), original 11th-13th century parchments, and underwater archaeological finds. A 3D reproduction of the 13th-century city model illustrates the Duchy's peak power. The exhibition was curated by Vincenzo De Luce. The recently restored wooden galley Vittoria, which won the first Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics, is also on view. Mayor Daniele Milano made admission free, and the museum is fully accessible with multilingual texts. It is part of Amalfi's Tourism Development Plan by Joseph Ejarque, former marketing director for Catalan and Turin tourism boards.
