Alvisi Kirimoto Reflects on Exhibition Design with Germano Celant for Emilio Vedova Show

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The architecture firm Alvisi Kirimoto collaborated with curator Germano Celant on the exhibition 'Emilio Vedova' at Palazzo Reale in Milan. The project, initiated by Alfredo Bianchini, president of the Fondazione Emilio e Annabianca Vedova, aimed to create a space where visitors could experience Vedova's works intimately. The design centered on a monumental wall nearly 40 meters long and 5 meters high that divided the Sala delle Cariatidi, altering perception of the space. Windows were left open to introduce urban light and views of Piazza del Duomo, recontextualizing Vedova's engagement with external spaces. Celant insisted on homogeneous, natural-like lighting to let the artworks speak. Junko Kirimoto built a 1:50 scale model to plan artwork placement. Celant was deeply involved on-site, even repositioning lights at night. The collaboration was marked by mutual respect and Celant's ability to push the architects toward bold solutions.
