Alvin Curran's Piano Installation in Abruzzo Countryside
In 2017, the open-air 'gallery without walls' No Man's Land in Loreto Aprutino, Abruzzo, added a new site-specific sound installation by American-born, Italian-adopted composer Alvin Curran. Titled 'Pian de pian piano', the work features a grand piano resting on one original leg and large white stones, tilted as if fallen from the sky, playing a mechanically generated melody amidst a forest. The installation joins earlier works on the land donated by Mario Pieroni, founder of RAM – Radio Arte Mobile and Zerynthia, including Yona Friedman's largest installation (2016) created with Jean-Baptiste Decavèle. Curran, a student of Elliott Carter and active in Rome's Beat '72 and Galleria L'Attico circles, redefines minimalism through electronic experimentation. The piano is intentionally left to the elements; Curran provides a pickaxe on the stool, provocatively inviting destruction and natural re-creation. The project is curated by Zerynthia Associazione per l'Arte Contemporanea OdV and donated to the environment, with annual observations planned to document nature's impact.
