Álvaro Siza's 'Neighbourhood' at Giudecca for Venice Architecture Biennale
For the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale, the Portuguese Pavilion presents 'Neighbourhood – Where Alvaro meets Aldo', curated by Nuno Grande and Roberto Cremascoli. The project centers on Álvaro Siza Vieira, Portugal's most celebrated living architect, and his return to four neighborhoods he designed between the late 1970s and 1980s: Porto, Berlin, The Hague, and Venice's Campo Marte on Giudecca. At Campo Marte, a palisade that stood abandoned for over a decade has been transformed into the pavilion's ground-floor cladding, now displaying portraits by Niccolò Galeazzi and Jordi Burch of residents who hosted Siza during his visits. Inside, the first room features a virtual encounter with Aldo Rossi, followed by documentation of Siza's journey through photos, drawings, models, and video reports by Candida Pinto. The opening included a communal lunch on the street where Siza's and Rossi's interventions meet, attended by residents and guests such as Rafael Moneo, Phyllis Lambert, and Cino Zucchi, with photographic documentation by Gianluca Vassallo.
