Álvaro Siza's Italian Journey at Accademia Nazionale di San Luca

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The exhibition 'Il Grand Tour. Álvaro Siza in Italia 1976-2016' at the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome, curated by Roberto Cremascoli and Francesco Moschini, explores the Portuguese architect's deep relationship with Italy over four decades. Siza's Italian journey began in 1977 when he toured universities from Turin to Palermo presenting the Saal housing project with Nuno Portas and Alexandre Alves Costa. He later collaborated with Roberto Collovà on the Salemi project and participated in reconstruction efforts in the Belice valley after the 1968 earthquake. The exhibition also features 'La misura dell’Occidente', a photographic dialogue between Siza and Giovanni Chiaramonte, documenting their travels across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. During the preview, a rare meeting of architects Umberto Riva, Álvaro Siza, and Francesco Venezia took place at the Church of Santi Luca e Martina. Francesco Moschini announced a potential three-year collaboration for the Premio Presidente della Repubblica, starting with a pavilion by Siza. The show runs until February 25, 2017.
