Álvaro Siza's complete archive goes online

digital · 2026-05-05

A substantial part of Álvaro Siza's archive has been made freely accessible online since early February 2018, through the joint effort of the Fundação de Serralves (Porto), the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisbon), and the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA, Montreal). The three institutions have shared the architect's complete archive since 2014, which includes 500 models, about 60,000 drawings, 282 sketchbooks, and textual materials. The Portuguese institutions hold documents related to Siza's work in Portugal from 1958 to 2006, while the CCA holds international projects and recent studies. Siza, winner of the 1992 Pritzker Architecture Prize, chose these institutions to ensure accessibility and research. The archive covers early works like the Boa Nova Tea House and Leça de Palmeira pool, the Berlin residential complex Bonjour Tristesse, and projects in Italy and worldwide. Future plans include making all studies on housing, urban planning, cultural centers, museums, and universities available online.
