Álvaro Siza Honored with Two Exhibitions in Italy and Portugal

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The exhibition "Álvaro Siza. Viagem Sem Programa," originally a collateral event of the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale at Fondazione Querini Stampalia, has been revived in an expanded version at FAB, Fiandre Architectural Bureau in Castellarano, Italy. Curated by Raul Betti and Greta Ruffino of Dumbo Design Studio, the show features 53 works from Siza's sketchbooks, selected by the architect himself, plus a documentary filmed in Portugal. The new iteration includes a display case with memorabilia and 132 photographs documenting the project's genesis and collaborations, notably with curators Roberto Cremascoli and Nuno Grande for the Portuguese Pavilion "Where Alvaro meets Aldo" at the Giudecca island. Meanwhile, in Porto, the studio COR Arquitectos / Cremascoli Okumura Rodrigues was commissioned by Suzanne Cotter, director of the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, to design a new installation for the permanent collection. The museum, opened in 1999 and designed by Siza, features 14 galleries over three levels. The installation, titled "Coleção de Serralves: 1960-1980," spans 880 square meters and introduces a new format where architectural firms reinterpret Siza's spaces. It uses seven colors inspired by the surrounding garden to guide visitors through conceptual and minimalist artworks. The exhibition runs until January 28, 2018.
