AlUla's regenerative tourism model blends heritage, sustainability, and luxury

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

AlUla, an oasis in Saudi Arabia, is setting a new standard for regenerative tourism that emphasizes cultural heritage, community engagement, and sustainability, in stark contrast to the UAE's large-scale developments. For the past eight years, the Royal Commission for AlUla has collaborated with France's AFALULA to enhance the area. Among its historical treasures is Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring more than 100 rock-cut tombs. The community consists of farmers and artisans, with educational institutions dedicated to preserving traditional crafts. The "Oasis to Table" initiative encourages local food production. Chef Alain Ducasse's pop-up eatery near Jabal Ikmah has been extended through February 21. Upcoming luxury eco-resorts include Banyan Tree AlUla, with a Hyatt set to open in 2026 and a Marriott in 2027. AlUla is targeting 1 million visitors by 2030.
