Altza Municipal Sports Center Opens in San Sebastián

In Donostia / San Sebastián, Spain, the Altza Municipal Sports Center has officially opened its doors, a project crafted by the architectural firms Tabuenca & Leache and Chocarro & Herranz. Finished in 2022, this expansive 10,500 m² facility replaces an older sports complex that was taken down due to structural concerns. The design incorporates existing retaining walls and portions of the foundation from the previous building. The sports court has been elevated above the indoor swimming pools, creating a new plaza facing west, complete with outdoor courts and a small fronton. A solarium to the south features an outdoor pool, children's water play areas, and two auxiliary pavilions for changing and storage. Key team members included Fernando Tabuenca, Jesús Leache, Javier Chocarro, Alfonso Herranz, Alfonso Vázquez, Imanol Iturria, and Susana Martínez, with technical assistance from Chocarro&Herranz + Tabuenca&Leache. Collaborators were Raúl Escrivá, Naven Ingeniería, Andoni Gallart, Valeria Jaros, and Ismael Sainz.
