Alternative Art Schools in South America Challenge Traditional Education Models
In 1968, Paulo Freire's 'Pedagogy of the Oppressed' significantly shaped radical art education across South America, emphasizing the role of students as co-creators. This approach was embraced by institutions such as Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) in São Paulo and Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro. In 1992, Peru saw the establishment of Corriente Alterna, Escuela de Arte y Diseño, a response to the conservative nature of public universities. In Buenos Aires, Guillermo Kuitca initiated the 'Beca Kuitca' in 1991 to support 20 emerging artists. Más Arte Más Acción started in Colombia in 2010 but was suspended in 2023. In São Paulo, Casa do Povo introduced Casa Escola, a six-month program led by Luiza Crosman. Founded by Miguel Braceli in 2022, LA ESCUELA___ provides free workshops, while El Validadero in Bogotá, established in 2015, offers a hybrid program with varied outcomes.
