Scuole d'arte alternative fioriscono in tutta l'Asia orientale e sudorientale
Una nuova rete di scuole d'arte alternative è emersa in Asia orientale e sudorientale, con l'obiettivo di sovvertire i quadri educativi tradizionali. Fondata dopo le proteste studentesche del 1968, la Gendaishicho-sha Bigakkō di Tokyo offre un approccio diverso. A Guangzhou, Huang Xiaopeng ha fondato l'h b Station Contemporary Art Research Centre dopo la sua uscita dalla Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. La Linangan Art Residency nelle Filippine, avviata nel 2018, coinvolge artisti come Manny Garibay in programmi diversificati. Il Rooftop Institute di Hong Kong, iniziato nel 2016 da Yim Sui Fong, Law Yuk Mui e dal professor Frank Vigneron, enfatizza l'impegno sociale. La School of Improper Education a Yogyakarta, anch'essa fondata nel 2016, critica le convenzioni educative. Il T-project di Hangzhou è iniziato nel 2017, insieme ad altre iniziative come Sa Sa Art Projects, Green Papaya Art Projects, Five Arts Centre e Gudskul, tutte dedicate a nutrire le comunità artistiche locali.

- Sa Sa Art Projects opera a Phnom Penh, Green Papaya Art Projects a Manila e Five Arts Centre a Kuala Lumpur.
- Gudskul in Indonesia enfatizza la pratica collettiva in aree prive di un'ampia infrastruttura artistica.
