Alternative Art Schools Flourish Across East and Southeast Asia
A new network of alternative art schools has surfaced in East and Southeast Asia, aiming to disrupt traditional educational frameworks. Established after the 1968 student protests, Tokyo's Gendaishicho-sha Bigakkō offers a different approach. In Guangzhou, Huang Xiaopeng founded the h b Station Contemporary Art Research Centre following his exit from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. The Linangan Art Residency in the Philippines, launched in 2018, engages artists such as Manny Garibay in diverse programs. Hong Kong's Rooftop Institute, initiated in 2016 by Yim Sui Fong, Law Yuk Mui, and Professor Frank Vigneron, emphasizes social involvement. The School of Improper Education in Yogyakarta, also founded in 2016, critiques educational conventions. Hangzhou's T-project started in 2017, alongside other initiatives like Sa Sa Art Projects, Green Papaya Art Projects, Five Arts Centre, and Gudskul, all dedicated to nurturing local artistic communities.
