Alternative Art Education Models Challenge Neoliberal Institutions Through Self-Organized Collectives

opinion-review · 2026-04-20

Kuba Szreder, a sociologist, explores informal art education platforms as viable substitutes for conventional art schools, which he believes primarily equip students for market engagement. In 2009, he co-established the Free/Slow University of Warsaw (F/SUW), concentrating on issues of artistic precarity and exploitation. Globally, these models highlight 'really useful knowledge' rooted in 19th-century socialist discussions. In his 2010 work 'Dark Matter', Greg Sholette posits that such institutions address social responsibilities neglected by neoliberal policies, evident in declining wages and escalating student debt. Notable F/SUW events include a 2009 picnic with Martin Kaltwasser and a 2012 'art strike' led by Kasia Górna. The 2022 manifesto 'Art for UBI' was released by the School of Mutation. In Congo, the CATPC and IHA are reclaiming resources through initiatives like the Balot NFT. Angela McRobbie refers to this collective as the 'artist-precariat', while Szreder terms them the 'projectariat'.
