Alternative Art Education Initiatives Across MENASA Region

publication · 2026-04-20

Alternative art education programs across the MENASA region offer diverse approaches outside traditional institutions. In Saudi Arabia, the Misk Art Institute launched in 2017 to address a lack of official support for artists, according to its director Ahmed Mater. Lebanon's Home Workspace Program began in 2011 as a free yearlong course by Ashkal Alwan, founded by Christine Tohmé, with mentors including Emily Jacir, Joana Hadjithomas, and Kader Attia. Jordan's Spring Sessions started in 2014 as collaborative outdoor workshops founded by Noura Al Khasawneh and Toleen Touq, returning in 2023 after a hiatus. In India, Kala Bhavana was established in 1919 in Santiniketan by Rabindranath Tagore with an interdisciplinary approach. Pakistan's National College of Arts in Lahore has produced notable artists like Shahzia Sikander and Imran Qureshi. New Delhi's Khoj, founded in 1997 by artists including Subodh Gupta, provides workshops and residencies. Other regional initiatives include the School of Casablanca, inspired by 1960s Bauhaus movements, and the nonprofit mass Alexandria, created by Wael Shawky in 2010 but inactive since 2019. These programs emphasize experiential learning, technical skills, and community engagement, often responding to gaps in formal education systems.
