Altaroma's 'A.I. The Shape of Water' Fuses Craft, Migration, and Sustainability

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The summer edition of Altaroma in Rome features 'A.I. The Shape of Water,' a creative project curated by Clara Tosi Pamphili and Alessio de’ Navasques. The exhibition explores artisanal intelligence through upcycled garments and waste textiles, emphasizing environmental sustainability and migrant integration. Highlights include archive pieces from Orsola de Castro's 'From Somewhere' collection, swimwear from a Speedo collaboration (2010), and the Unity Dress from the 2012 London Olympics. The project collaborates with Nation.25, a participatory platform founded in 2015 by Elena Abbiatici, Sara Alberani, and Caterina Pecchioli, which organizes the Nationless Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Other participants include Talking Hands, Atelier Trame Libere, and designers Nosakhara Ekhator and Moustapha Sulla. Emersum Impact Lab, led by Daniele Biscontini, provides scientific research on material certification and environmental impact. Greek artists Ioannis Kaliopoulos and Paola Palavidi created tapestries using GPS data during a residency at Lanificio Paoletti. The exhibition also features the 'B&W – Black & White la tendenza migrante' workshop, initiated at Rome's Macro museum. The event takes place at PratiBus District.
