Altan's Ecologist Comics on Display in Udine
Francesco Tullio-Altan, the renowned Italian cartoonist and creator of Pimpa, presents his environmental-themed works in the exhibition "ALTAN. Terra, omini e bestie" at Palazzo Frisacco in Tolmezzo, Udine. The show, curated by Giovanna Durì in collaboration with Altan's daughter Kika, runs until September 22, 2024. It features over 300 original drawings, many addressing ecological issues since the 1970s. The exhibition is divided into two sections: one with more than 200 vignettes depicting characters like Cipputi, Italo, Ugo and Luisa, and Trino (a clumsy god created in 1974 for Linus magazine), and another dedicated to animals with over 100 pastels, inks, and watercolors rarely shown publicly. A special area honors Pimpa, the polka-dotted dog invented in 1975 for Kika. The show follows recent monographic exhibitions at Palazzo Buontalenti in Pistoia, Fondazione MAST in Bologna, and MAXXI in Rome. Regional Culture Councilor Mario Anzil emphasized the collaboration between administrative levels that brought Altan's works to Friuli Venezia Giulia. Accompanying educational workshops for children are scheduled for July 31, August 6 and 8, and September 21.
