Alserkal Advisory Announces Artists for Global Co-Commission Project Addressing Climate Crisis

Alserkal Advisory has revealed the artists participating in A Feral Commons, the first iteration of The Global Co-Commission Project, a collaboration with the Global Cultural Districts Network. The initiative involves cultural districts in Dubai, Johannesburg, and Kingston, focusing on climate crisis responses through site-specific works. In Dubai's Alserkal Avenue, Riyadh-based artist Muhannad Shono, who represented Saudi Arabia at the 59th Venice Biennale, will create a piece exploring ecological activities in the city's industrial center. Kingston Creative in Jamaica will feature Manchester-based Jamaican artist Camille Chedda, whose work engages with the abandoned Lower South Camp Park and themes of postcoloniality and ecology. Victoria Yards in Johannesburg has commissioned South African artist Io Makandal to install a work along the Jukskei river, examining pollution and industrial ruins. According to a statement by Tairone Bastien, the artists aim to reimagine public art by producing functional, generative pieces that address local environmental issues and foster interspecies collaboration. Each commission draws on research into natural phenomena that resist human control, inviting public engagement with feral ecologies to learn about resilience and survival strategies amid the climate emergency.
