Almaty Museum of Arts Opens in Kazakhstan with Landmark Exhibitions and Global Ambitions

In September 2023, the Almaty Museum of Arts was inaugurated in Kazakhstan, marking Central Asia's first private modern and contemporary art museum, established by Nurlan Smagulov. The museum, designed by Chapman Taylor, spans 10,000 square meters and includes an atrium known as Art Street. At its heart lies Smagulov's impressive collection of over 700 artworks from Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and other international artists. Artistic director Meruyert Kaliyeva seeks to elevate Central Asian culture through various exhibitions and discussions. Notable opening exhibitions include 'Qonaqtar,' curated by Inga Lāce, and a retrospective of Almagul Menlibayeva titled 'I Understand Everything,' curated by Gridthiya Gaweewong. Additionally, the museum showcases long-term installations by renowned artists such as Richard Serra and Yayoi Kusama, along with outdoor pieces by Alicja Kwade and Jaume Plensa.
