Allan Kaprow's Yard installed at Macro Museum in Rome

The Macro Museum in Rome has installed Allan Kaprow's 1961 installation Yard in its atrium, marking the first presentation of the work in Rome. Yard, originally shown at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York, consists of hundreds of randomly arranged tires that visitors can throw, climb, and move. The work is integrated with the ongoing Sonata Festival DJ sets until September 22, 2024, and will serve as the setting for the group exhibition Post scriptum. Kaprow, who coined the term 'Happening,' pioneered ephemeral, time-based art. His 1966 non-sequential exhibition Assemblage, Environments and Happenings in his New York apartment featured rooms with fleeting events like lighting a match or peeling an orange. The installation at Macro also connects to the ongoing group show Retrofuturo, which includes a video work by Roberto Fassone linking random YouTube videos to historic performances, including children running through tires in Yard.
