Allan Kaprow Retrospective at Haus der Kunst, Munich

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From October 18, 2006, to January 21, 2007, Haus der Kunst in Munich hosted a posthumous exhibition dedicated to Allan Kaprow, who passed away on April 5, 2006. Curated by Stephanie Rosenthal, the show, titled "The Museum as an Agency for Action," emphasized documentation and encouraged emerging artists to reinterpret Kaprow's happenings, focusing on themes of site-specificity, ephemerality, and skepticism regarding art. Among the notable re-enactments was "18 Happenings in 6 Parts," which took place from November 9 to 11. The exhibition also showcased early works like "Interior with Lamp" (1947) and "Still Life with Folding Chair" (1948), as well as Assemblage pieces from 1956 to 1958, and extensive documentation from the Getty Institute archives, adhering to Kaprow's preference of excluding photographs. Young artists presented their re-inventions at the entrance.
