All Italian museums ordered to close for one month due to COVID-19

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

On March 8, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Italian government ordered the closure of all cultural institutions and museums until at least April 3, 2020. A lockdown was also enforced in Lombardy and 14 northern provinces, allowing movement only for essential reasons. Museums in areas deemed high-risk are "closed," while others across Italy are "suspended." This measure, reminiscent of wartime shutdowns, references Article 101 of the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code (Legislative Decree 42/2004). All public events are halted. To adapt, some institutions are embracing digital platforms, with Triennale Milano launching Radio Triennale and Triennale Decameron, alongside others providing video archives and streaming services. Adherence to these restrictions is crucial for restoring normalcy.
