Alison Jacques Gallery presents Angel with a Gun, a tribute exhibition drawn from critic Guy Brett's collection

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Angel with a Gun at Alison Jacques in London honors the late critic and curator Guy Brett, who died in 2021, through a display of works from his personal collection. The exhibition, organized into three roughly chronological sections, begins with 1960s Kinetic and Op art pieces, including Jesús Rafael Soto's Physichromie 127 (Plates 58 A-C) from 1964 and Vibration from 1965. A second section focuses on politically charged works from the 1970s and 80s, such as Hélio Oiticica's protest banner Seja marginal seja herói (1968) and Cildo Meireles's Zero Cruzeiro (1978), which comment on Latin American dictatorships. The final section, housed in the basement, is dedicated to Brazilian artist Lygia Clark, featuring her tactile sculptures like Bicho (Monument in all situations) (1964) and Estruturas de Caixa de Fósforos (1964). Brett, who became chief art critic for The Times at age twenty-two in 1964, was known for championing Latin American artists and was dismissed from the newspaper in 1975 due to the political nature of his writing. He organized Oiticica's first solo UK show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1969. The exhibition runs through 15 June, offering a dialogue on non-Western artistic history and political engagement.
