Alina Kalczyńska Scheiwiller Retrospective at Biblioteca Braidense
The main hall of the Biblioteca Braidense in Milan hosts an anthological exhibition of Polish artist Alina Kalczyńska (born 1936). Over thirty years ago, she moved to Milan for love of publisher Vanni Scheiwiller, settling between Krakow and Otranto. Her work focuses on books and engraving, creating unique or limited edition artist's books that dialogue with written words by poets such as Szymborska, Sbarbaro, and Montale. The exhibition features artist's books, woodcuts, and mixed media pieces, described by Giuseppe Appella as exhibiting "the playful lightness of line." First-person captions reveal hidden stories within the engraved fine papers, reflecting a time when art and publishing defined an entire life. The exhibition is curated by Lorenzo Madaro, a contemporary art curator and professor at Brera Academy since November 2022.
