Alighiero Boetti: 10 Works That Define His Artistic Journey
Alighiero Boetti, born December 16, 1940 in Turin to a noble but declining Monferrato family, was a self-taught artist who became a leading figure of Arte Povera in the late 1960s, rejecting oil paintings and marble statues in favor of everyday materials like slate, wax, wood, and felt. He later broke with the movement, moved to Rome, and embraced conceptual art, changing his name to Alighiero & Boetti to signify a dual artistic identity. His diverse oeuvre spans postal works, embroidered maps, biro drawings, and the famous 'Mappe' (world maps embroidered by Afghan women). Key works include: 'Lampada Annuale' (1966), a light bulb in a wooden box that illuminates once a year for 11 seconds; 'Colonne' (1968), nine columns made of stacked paper doilies on iron rods; 'Dossier Postale' (1969-70), letters sent to imaginary addresses; 'Ammazzare il tempo' (1979), an embroidered tapestry with decipherable phrases; 'Mappa' (1988-89), a world map with countries colored by their flags; 'I mille fiumi più lunghi del mondo' (1976-82), a book and two tapestries listing the world's longest rivers; 'Aerei' (1983), a biro drawing of airplanes; 'Tutto' (1992-94), a series of embroideries made with Afghan refugees in Pakistan after the Soviet invasion; '15 libri rossi' (1993-94), fifteen red-bound photo diaries; and 'Autoritratto' (1993), a bronze self-portrait where water on heated metal produces steam, created after his brain tumor diagnosis. Boetti died in 1994.
