Alicja Kwade's 'Materia, per ora' at Fondazione Giuliani Explores Matter and Disintegration
Fondazione Giuliani in Rome presents 'Materia, per ora,' a solo exhibition by Polish-born German artist Alicja Kwade (b. 1979), running through 2018. The show features fifteen works centered on the dissolution of matter, including the key installation 'Etwas Abwesendes, dessen Anwesenheit erwartet wurde' (2015), which depicts marble blocks reduced by one-eighth of their weight to dust, evoking Caspar David Friedrich's 'Das Eismeer' (1824). Other works like 'Lampe, Radio e Kaminhur' (2017) contain pulverized chemical elements of everyday objects, while '1518 leere Liter bis zum Anfang' (2008–2018) consists of plastic fragments from mineral water bottles consumed over a year by staff at Berlin's Galerie König. Kwade, who lives and works in Berlin, gained Italian recognition with her installation 'WeltenLinie' at the 57th Venice Biennale and participation in 'Liaisons' at Villa Medici with Lara Favaretto and Latifa Echakhch. The exhibition, curated by Ludovico Pratesi, aligns Kwade with sculptural traditions of Luciano Fabro, Richard Serra, Eva Hesse, and Giovanni Anselmo.
