Alice Rohrwacher and JR Reimagine Plato's Cave in Short Film 'Allegoria cittadina'

Italian director Alice Rohrwacher and French artist JR have collaborated on a new short film titled 'Allegoria cittadina,' which reinterprets Plato's allegory of the cave. The film streams exclusively on MUBI. It stars young Naïm El Kaldaoui, Lyna Khoudri, and Leos Carax, with cinematography by Daria D'Antonio (who also worked on Paolo Sorrentino's 'Parthenope') and a score by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk. The project was teased by JR on social media in January 2024. This marks the duo's second collaboration after 2019's 'Omelia Contadina,' a short defending traditional agriculture. The film draws on JR's 2023 performance 'Chiroptera' at the Opéra Garnier in Paris, which featured dancers against a giant cave backdrop. In 'Allegoria cittadina,' the cave imagery is explored through a child's perspective, blending fiction and reality.
