Alice Neel's 'Beautifully Imperfect' Retrospective at Museu Serralves
From July 16, 2026, to January 31, 2027, the Museu Serralves in Porto will host 'Beautifully Imperfect,' a retrospective showcasing the work of American artist Alice Neel (1900–1984). This exhibition emphasizes Neel's unconventional portrayals of human figures and faces. Throughout her career, shaped by events like the Great Depression, WWII, civil rights movements, feminism, and gay liberation, she prioritized the human form over market demands. Neel's prominence grew after her 1970 Time cover featuring Kate Millett and her portrait of Andy Warhol that same year. Her significant recognition began with a 1974 retrospective at the Whitney Museum. The Serralves exhibition includes thematic displays, such as a self-portrait, letters from fans, and sections on family and loss, as well as still lifes and personal artifacts. The promotional poster features James Hunter, a Black recruit she painted in 1965.
