Alice Bidault's 'Les Quatre Parques' at FIAC 2019
At FIAC 2019, Galerie Pietro Spartà presented Alice Bidault's sculpture 'Les Quatre Parques' (2018). The work comprises four steel rods, several meters high, topped with galvanized steel distaffs partially wrapped in wire, weathered by rust and weather. Bidault, born in 1994 in Burgundy and a graduate of Beaux-Arts de Dijon, draws from archaeological excavations and absent contexts to create fictional narratives. The title references the three Fates of Greek mythology who spin, measure, and cut the thread of life; Bidault adds a fourth Fate representing liberation and free will. The materials were sourced from an abandoned farm, echoing Arte Povera. The gallery, based in Chagny (pop. 5,000, Burgundy), has represented artists like Mario Merz, Janis Kounellis, Sol LeWitt, and Annette Messager since 1984. The sculpture measures approximately 400 x 200 x 80 cm and is made of forged steel, galvanized steel, and copper wire.
