Alia Farid's 'Bneid Al Gar' at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter explores resource exploitation through sculpture and film.
Alia Farid, an artist from Kuwait and Puerto Rico, showcased her most extensive solo exhibition titled 'Bneid Al Gar' at the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Oslo, which will conclude on 5 January 2025. This exhibition included a variety of media such as sculptures, textiles, paper, and film, focusing on themes of environmental decline and cultural dislocation. Farid was honored with the Lise Wilhelmsen Art Award, which comes with a $100,000 prize. Notable pieces comprised five large fiberglass sculptures from her 2022 series 'In Lieu of What Is' and textile works from her 2023 'Elsewhere' series, which delve into Palestinian symbolism in Puerto Rico. Additionally, two films, 'Chibayish' (2022-2023) and 'At the Time of the Ebb' (2019), were featured, highlighting her collaborative approach and the fragile nature of landscapes and traditions.
