Alfredo Volpi's First European Solo Show in Monaco Captivates Audiences

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Alfredo Volpi's exhibition 'Alfredo Volpi – La Poétique de la couleur' at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, running from February 9 to May 20, marks his first solo presentation in a public institution outside Brazil. Featuring approximately 70 works created between 1940 and 1970, the show has generated surprise and enchantment among European viewers, who are discovering the artist often called Brazil's most beloved 20th-century painter. Organized with significant effort by the Instituto Alfredo Volpi de Arte Moderna and support from Galeria Almeida e Dale, the exhibition's educational impact is noted by Instituto Volpi director Pedro Mastrobuono. Princess Caroline of Hanover, who opened the show, expressed admiration for Volpi's work. Curator Cristiano Raimondi points to European influences like Matisse and Cézanne on the self-taught painter. Concurrently, works selected by Luisa Strina are displayed at Sotheby's S|2 gallery in London until March 29, described as 'exploratory modernism,' alongside an exhibition of Italian artist Bice Lazzari. Sotheby's will also hold auctions of Volpi's works on April 13 and June 29. Posters advertising the Monaco exhibition appear in cities across northwestern Italy and southeastern France.
