Alfredo Pirri's 'Ritratto di Palazzo' Transforms Bologna's Palazzo Boncompagni

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Alfredo Pirri (born 1957 in Cosenza) presents 'Ritratto di Palazzo' at Palazzo Boncompagni in Bologna, a site-specific exhibition curated by Lorenzo Balbi and Silvia Evangelisti. The show includes the installation 'Passi'—a floor of shattered mirrors in the Salone Papale—created through a performance with Paola Pizzighini Benelli, the palace owner. Other works span three colored rooms (red, yellow, green) with watercolors and large paintings, a loggia with architectural sculptures like 'Compagni e Angeli' and 'Le jardin féerique', and 'Progetto per un interno rosso', a red box revealing a miniature red square. The ground floor houses 'RWD-FWD', an evolving archive of over 1,500 documents, and a video 'Ritratto di Palazzo con signora' documenting the mirror-breaking performance. Pirri's practice explores time, light, space, and form, blending painting, sculpture, and architecture. The exhibition runs at Palazzo Boncompagni, a 16th-century Renaissance palace built for Pope Gregory XIII, managed by Fondazione Palazzo Boncompagni (established 2022) with the Pizzighini Benelli family. The project is part of ArtCity, Bologna's program coinciding with Arte Fiera.
