Alexi Marshall's Celtic Folklore-Inspired Works at Z2o Project in Rome
London-born artist Alexi Marshall (b. 1995) presents 'Taming the Unruly Gods' at Z2o Project in Rome, a domestic project room that will soon be joined by a new city space. The exhibition features mosaics with vitreous tiles, linoleum and banana paper engravings, drawings, and embroideries on mixed fabrics and beads. Marshall's work draws on Celtic culture, alchemy, and myth, reflecting on life's unexpected variables. Her pieces show a strong affinity with Niki de Saint Phalle, evident in the use of glass, colorful textures, assemblages, and arcane symbols. Figures in mosaics and watercolors are filled with tarot cards, benign demons, and ambiguous zoomorphic-human simulacra, celebrating femininity in its wild, ancestral aspects. A notable collography honors Belkis Ayón (Havana, 1967–1999), a key figure in Latin American printmaking for her technique and exploration of Afro-Cuban cult darkness. The impactful mosaic 'Fish supper' depicts Marshall's alter ego spearing a mackerel, still caught with nets in Hastings, where she works. The pomegranate motif opens and closes the exhibition, presented both as a symbol of abundance and good luck, and as a negative omen of Christ's Passion and impending winter.
