Alexey Morosov's Pontifex Maximus at MANN, Naples
At the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (MANN), Russian artist Alexey Morosov (b. 1974) presents 'Pontifex Maximus,' a solo exhibition featuring around thirty new works created specifically for the museum. The show, curated by Alessandro Romanini and Kristina Krasnyanskaya, continues the museum's dialogue between antiquity and contemporaneity. Morosov's works—including 'Artemisia,' 'Cantata iTunes,' 'i Core,' 'Tarquin le Superbe,' and 'Ericius' (all 2016)—blend classical forms with post-apocalyptic, futuristic imagery, such as gladiators riding electric chariots and wielding machine guns. The artist describes his approach as a strategy to connect with the present and future through classical iconography, creating a 'neo-antique' aesthetic that critiques current technocracies and systems of global control. The exhibition runs until August 31, 2016, and is a collaboration with the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.
