Alexey Morosov's 'Exodus' Transforms Pisa into Open-Air Sculpture Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The diffuse exhibition 'Exodus' by Alexey Morosov (born 1974 in Kyrgyzstan) is on view in Pisa until September 29, 2024, turning iconic sites—Piazza dei Miracoli, Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina, Palazzo Blu, Fortilizio, and Torre Guelfa—into a sprawling open-air sculpture show. Curated by Gian Guido Grassi, the project features large-scale works that engage with social concepts and equality, drawing on archaic cults, biblical promises, Puccini's music, and Chekhov's prophetic writings. A program of guided summer walks with the curator began in July and continues on August 25, September 1, and September 15. Morosov, who studied painting and drawing at the Academy and later perfected marble and metal sculpture in the Apuo-Versilian area, had solo shows in St. Petersburg in 2003 at D-137 Gallery and the Academy. Since 2014 he has been a member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts, and since 2015 he lives and works in Lucca. His research combines contemporary languages with a reinterpretation of Western cultural myths, as seen in his 2016 exhibition at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. Grassi describes art as a powerful communication tool that creates a portal across millennia and bridges cultures, with Morosov's works forming a total artwork that guides visitors through a personal exodus.
