Alexa Karolinski and Ingo Niermann's Army of Love exhibition at Auto Italia explores love, desire, and inequality
From October 4 to December 8, 2019, the exhibition Army of Love by Alexa Karolinski and Ingo Niermann was held at Auto Italia in London. This showcase featured two docufiction films: Army of Love (2016) and Oceano de amor (2019). Both films delve into the collective pursuit of love and highlight issues of sensual injustice through interviews that discuss desire and societal limitations. In Army of Love, participants reflect while in an indoor pool, whereas Oceano de amor, set in Cuba, shows army personnel talking about love and automation in the context of their social environment. The exhibition critiques the algorithms of dating apps and consumer capitalism, raising questions about the potential for eliminating social inequality without compromising the distinctiveness of desire. It was reviewed in the January & February 2020 issue of ArtReview.
