Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb on Brooklyn, Loss, and Creative Process

Renowned photographers Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb, interviewed by Artribune at the launch of Rebecca's exhibition 'My Dakota' at RVM Hub in Milan, discuss their upcoming joint project 'The City Within'—a photographic exploration of Brooklyn as they prepare to leave the borough after nearly 20 years. Alex is photographing the cultural diversity of Brooklyn neighborhoods, while Rebecca focuses on green spaces like Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery. Alex reflects on his shift from black-and-white to color photography, influenced by Latin American literature (Graham Greene, Gabriel García Márquez, Octavio Paz), and his recent turn toward photographing U.S. cities such as Indianapolis, Houston, Memphis, and Cleveland, particularly after the 2016 presidential election. Rebecca explains how 'My Dakota' evolved from a project about South Dakota's paradoxical landscape into an elegy for her brother David, who died suddenly in 2006. She also discusses her forthcoming monograph 'Night Calls,' documenting her father's rural medical practice. The couple offers advice to photography students: follow your passions and listen to your images.
