Alex Katz inaugurates Whitney Museum and High Line public art collaboration with new installation

exhibition · 2026-04-20

In mid-July, a new public art project will launch, thanks to a collaboration between The High Line and the Whitney Museum. Alex Katz will kick things off with a big digital version of his 2012 piece, Katherine and Elizabeth, which hasn’t been seen before. It’ll go up on the north wall of 95 Horatio Street, a residential building owned by T.F. Cornerstone, right at the southern end of The High Line in New York. Adam Weinberg, the Whitney's director, mentioned that the initiative aims to bring the museum closer to the community, especially since their new building is near the original Greenwich Village site. Katz, who has a long history with the museum, was selected by curators Chrissie Iles and Cecilia Alemani, in collaboration with exhibition coordinator Margaret Calvert-Cason. They worked together to pick an eye-catching image, ultimately choosing a portrait of two women. Katz has a history of public art, having completed several projects since the 1970s. This partnership will introduce a new artist every eight to twelve months, though the next one hasn’t been announced yet.
