Alex Katz and Pittori moderni della realtà exhibitions at MART Rovereto

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The MART in Rovereto presents two exhibitions: a major solo show of Alex Katz, the largest ever in Italy, and a survey of the Pittori moderni della realtà, a short-lived postwar Italian movement. Katz's show, titled 'Una eterna primavera' by MART president Vittorio Sgarbi, features 40 works from the late 1980s to the 2010s, spanning portraiture and landscape. Curated by Denis Isaia, it highlights Katz's rapid painting technique and colorist skill. The artist, aged 94, is experiencing global rediscovery with upcoming monographs at the Guggenheim New York (from August 16), the Thyssen-Bornemisza Foundation in Madrid (from June 11), and the Albertina in Vienna. The second exhibition focuses on the Pittori moderni della realtà, active 1947-1949, including Gregorio Sciltian, Pietro Annigoni, and the brothers Antonio and Xavier Bueno. Curated by Daniela Ferrari, it showcases their defense of classical painting against modernism, drawing on Caravaggio and Valori Plastici. Despite public and collector appreciation, the group faced critical backlash for alleged passatism and dissolved after five exhibitions.
