Alex Farquharson Named Director of Tate Britain, Succeeding Penelope Curtis

Alex Farquharson, the current director of Nottingham Contemporary, is set to take over as the new director of Tate Britain in late autumn. He succeeds Penelope Curtis, who has held the role since 2010 and has stepped down to head the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Recently, Farquharson co-curated the exhibition Glenn Ligon: Encounters and Collisions at both Nottingham Contemporary and Tate Liverpool. His previous curatorial experience includes co-curating the British Art Show 6 from 2005 to 2006. Farquharson earned his degree in English and fine art at the University of Exeter from 1988 to 1991 and completed a master's in arts criticism at City University, London, in 1992–93. Tate made the announcement today.
