Alex Chinneck's impossible spiral staircase sculpture in Brighton
British artist Alex Chinneck has unveiled a surreal new sculpture titled 'A spring in your step' on a building in Circus Street, Brighton. The 25-meter-tall work, made of galvanized steel, occupies the entire facade of the building. It begins as a conventional spiral staircase at the base but unravels as it rises, splitting into three branches that extend outward. Chinneck spent three years on the piece, which he describes as his most complex sculpture to date, following a non-repeating helical form that expands and contracts. The artist is known for surprising viewers; his previous works include 'World Revealed,' an installation created for the 2019 Fuorisalone in Milan.
