Alessio de Girolamo: Painting, Ceramics, and Sound

artist · 2026-04-27

Alessio de Girolamo (born 1980 in Sanremo) is an Italian artist who combines painting, ceramics, and sound. In 2015, he discovered similarities between atomic models and music, creating a system linking periodic table elements to piano sounds. Since 2017, he has worked on algorithms governing plant cell grammar, composing sound metaphors of growth. From 2018, he has focused on 'real-time' works altering soundscapes and images. Recently, in Puglia, he created works inspired by the region's red earth, later moving to painting and sound. He models wolf sculptures in clay, leaving them unglazed to preserve the earth's color. He collaborates with Anastasia Georgaki and her team on sound pieces blending wolf howls with primitive music. In 2017, at SRISA Gallery of Contemporary Art in Florence, he presented 'WHO'S AFRAID OF THE WOLF', featuring his first ceramic wolf, a room shielded with electromagnetic paint, and a live microwave 'concert'. He also developed a visual vocabulary based on the number 137, creating alphabet 'totems' on musical scores, later translated into ceramic plates produced by Stylnove (Lorenzo and Franco Zanovello). These were exhibited in 2020 during Milan Design Week in via Durini, with parrot sounds filling the space. The interview is part of Artribune's series 'Gli artisti e la ceramica' by Irene Biolchini.
