Alessandro Sambini's Post-Photographic Method at BPER Galleria in Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Alessandro Sambini (Rovigo, 1982) presents 'Human Image Recognition' at Banca Cesare Ponti in Milan, curated by Andrea Tinterri and Luca Zuccala with Giorgia Ligasacchi. The exhibition, on view from 2024, explores a post-photographic method where Sambini uses Uni POSCA markers to segment images into rectangles, mimicking AI's way of learning. The show is divided into three sections. The first focuses on Francesco Hayez's 'Maria Stewart che sale al patibolo' (1827), owned by the bank, which Sambini analyzed by drawing rectangles and writing captions. The second section features banal landscapes photographed by friends, subjected to the same analytical process. The third section presents three digital sketches fed to an AI to recreate works by photographers Jodice, Adams, and Gursky. Sambini's approach preserves the human gesture of drawing, contrasting with machine learning. The exhibition is part of BPER Galleria's third consecutive year of contemporary art shows in the historic bank space, with some works visible from outside.
