Alessandro Piangiamore's 'Marango' Opens at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò in New York
Sicilian artist Alessandro Piangiamore (born 1976 in Enna) presents 'Marango,' a new project in New York curated by Vittorio Calabrese. The exhibition is organized by Magazzino Italian Art (founded by Giorgio Spanu and Nancy Olnick), Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò at New York University, and the Roman gallery Magazzino Arte Moderna. The title 'Marango' derives from a Sicilian term for the amaranth plant, originally from Peru and historically used in the textile industry. The show traces Piangiamore's ties to Sicily and Rome, where he lives and works, culminating in a site-specific installation at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò. The space is filled with works from series including 'Ieri Ikebana,' 'La cera di Roma,' 'Belvedere,' and 'Primavera Piangiamore.' A new site-specific piece, 'Tutto il vento che c'è (All the Wind that Blows),' is described as a tribute to nature's unpredictable force. It continues the artist's long-running series capturing all the world's winds ironically, featuring small monoliths exposed to the elements—in this case, eroded by the Nor'easter wind from the Hudson Valley. The first monograph on Piangiamore, published by NERO, accompanies the exhibition. The show runs until June 14, 2019, at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò, 24 W 12th St, New York, NY 10011.
