Alessandro Neretti's MASQUERADE at Atipografia Explores Post-Colonial Senegal
Alessandro Neretti, an artist born in 1980 from Faenza, presents his solo exhibition MASQUERADE at Atipografia in Arzignano, Vicenza, running until August 2, 2025. The show stems from a residency at Espace Médina in Dakar, Senegal, hosted by artist Moussa Traoré and promoted with Milan's Viafarini. Neretti's new works address post-colonialism and neo-colonialism in Senegal, particularly Chinese influence, through sculptures, photographs, videos, and drawings. The exhibition is divided into two main nuclei: modified African masks with French text and modern logos, and large photographs of abandoned cars draped in traditional wax fabrics. Additional works include watercolors, ink drawings, three short videos, sculptures, and documentary material from his Dakar experience. Atipografia, a former printing laboratory transformed into a contemporary art space in 2022 by Elena Dal Molin and redesigned by studio AMAA, hosts the show. Neretti previously collaborated with AMAA at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. His research focuses on socio-political and economic dynamics, using cynicism to explore desire, body, and symbols, aiming to provoke resistance against historical and cultural collapse.
